NohKaLikai Falls,Meghalaya

👉Introduction:

Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. The 340 metres (1,115 ft) waterfall is located in the Indian state of Meghalaya, near Cherapunji (now known as Sohra), one of the wettest places on Earth. Nohkalikai Falls are fed by the rainwater collected on the summit of a comparatively small plateau and decrease in power during the dry season, from December to February. Below the falls is a plunge pool with water of an unusual shade of green. The waterfall cascades freely from a sheer cliff into a striking green-blue pool, surrounded by lush forests and misty hills.Monsoon (June–September) brings a roaring, powerful flow, multiplying the volume nearly 20-fold . Post-monsoon to winter offers clearer skies ideal for photography. The name “Nohkalikai” means “Jump of Ka Likai” in Khasi — a tragic tale of a grieving mother. After unknowingly consuming her child’s remains prepared by her jealous husband, she discovered the truth, went mad with sorrow, and leapt to her death from the cliff. The waterfall has been named in her memory ever since.

Best Season: Monsoon and immediate post-monsoon (June–December) offer full flow and vivid hues; winter–spring provides tranquil scenery and optimal photography.Shillong to Cherrapunji is about a 2 hours scenic drive (55 km),7 km from Cherrapunji to Nohkalikai Falls.
