LEH LADAKH

Introduction:

Ladakhย (โ€œland of high passesโ€) is a region in the Indian state ofย Jammu and Kashmirย that currently extends from theย Kunlun mountain rangeto the main Greatย Himalayasย to the south, inhabited by people ofย Indo-Aryanย andย Tibetanย descent.ย It is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir and its culture and history are closely related to that ofย Tibet. Ladakh is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and culture.

Historically, the region included theย Baltistanย (Baltiyul) valleys (now mostly inย Pakistan), the entire upperย Indus Valley, the remoteย Zanskar,ย Lahaul and Spitiย to the south, much ofย Ngariย including theย Rudokย region andย Gugeย in the east,ย Aksai Chinย in the northeast (extending to theย Kun Lun Mountains), and theย Nubra Valleyย to the north overย Khardong Laย in the Ladakh Range. Contemporary Ladakh bordersย Tibetย to the east, theย Lahaul and Spitiย regions to the south, the Vale ofย Kashmir,ย Jammuย andย Baltiyulย regions to the west, and the southwest corner ofย Xinjiangย across theย Karakoram Passย in the far north.

Aksai Chinย is one of the disputed border areas betweenย Chinaย andย India.ย It is administered by China as part ofย Hotan Countyย but is also claimed by India as a part of the Ladakh region of the state ofย Jammu and Kashmir. In 1962, China and India fought aย brief warover Aksai Chin andย Arunachal Pradesh, but in 1993 and 1996 the two countries signed agreements to respect theย Line of Actual Control.

In the past Ladakh gained importance from its strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes, but since the Chinese authorities closed the borders with Tibet andย Central Asiaย in the 1960s, international trade has dwindled except for tourism. Since 1974, theย Government of Indiaย has successfully encouragedย tourism in Ladakh. Since Ladakh is a part of strategically important Jammu and Kashmir, theย Indian militaryย maintains a strong presence in the region.

The largest town in Ladakh isย Leh, followed byย Kargil.ย Almost half of Ladakhis areย Shia Muslimsย and the rest are mostlyย Tibetan Buddhists.ย Some Ladakhi activists have in recent times called for Ladakh to be constituted as aย union territoryย because of perceived unfair treatment by Kashmir and Ladakhโ€™s cultural differences with predominantly Muslim Kashmir.
