IntroductionĀ :

KashmirĀ is the northernmost geographical region of theĀ Indian subcontinent. Until the mid-19th century, the term ā€œKashmirā€ denoted only theĀ Kashmir ValleyĀ between theĀ Great HimalayasĀ and theĀ Pir Panjal Range. Today, it denotes a larger area that includes the Indian-administered territory

ofĀ Jammu and KashmirĀ (subdivided intoĀ Jammu,Ā Kashmir, andĀ LadakhĀ divisions), the Pakistani-administered territories ofĀ Azad KashmirĀ andĀ Gilgit-Baltistan, and Chinese-administered territories ofĀ Aksai ChinĀ and theĀ Trans-Karakoram Tract.

In the first half of the 1st millennium, the Kashmir region became an important centre ofĀ HinduismĀ and later ofĀ Buddhism; later still, in the ninth century,Ā Kashmir ShaivismĀ arose.In 1339,Ā Shah MirĀ became the firstĀ MuslimĀ ruler of Kashmir, inaugurating theĀ Salatin-i-KashmirĀ orĀ Shah Mir dynastyĀ Kashmir was part of theĀ Mughal EmpireĀ from 1586 to 1751,Ā and thereafter, until 1820, of the AfghanĀ Durrani Empire.That year, theĀ Sikhs, underĀ Ranjit Singh, annexed Kashmir.Ā In 1846, after the Sikh defeat in theĀ First Anglo-Sikh War, and upon the purchase of the region from the British under theĀ Treaty of Amritsar, the Raja of Jammu,Ā Gulab Singh, became the new ruler of Kashmir. The rule of his descendants, under theĀ paramountcyĀ (or tutelage) of the British Crown, lasted until theĀ partition of IndiaĀ in 1947, when the formerĀ princely stateĀ of theĀ British RajĀ was claimed by bothĀ PakistanĀ andĀ India. It is currently a disputed territory, administered by three countries: India, Pakistan, andĀ China.

  • Martand Sun Temple– aĀ Kashmiri HinduĀ temple dedicated toĀ SuryaĀ (the chiefĀ solar deityĀ inĀ Hinduism) and built during the 8th century CE.Ā MartandĀ is anotherĀ SanskritĀ name for theĀ HinduĀ Sun-god. Now in ruins, the temple is located five miles fromĀ Anantnag.
